Why is music important?

ÒThere is a direct correlation between improved SAT scores and the length of time spent studying the arts. Those who studied the arts four or more years scored 59 points higher on verbal and 44 points higher on math portions of the SAT than students with no coursework or experience in the arts.Ó

- The College Board, compiled by MENC. 1995

The US Department of Labor issued a report in 1991 urging schools to teach for the future workplace. The skills they recommend (working in teams, communication, self-esteem, creative thinking, imagination and invention) are exactly those learned in school music education programs.

CMH's Education Program

School Performances

CMH ensembles can provide a wide selection of programs for entire schools or for music students.  Our programs span the centuries and the globe to present students with a broad perspective on music.  Special programs for music students can include discussion and demonstration of good performance habits, such as intonation, balance, ensemble, and tone production.

Interactive Presentations

We are also able to provide more interactive presentations that can be tailored to a music teacher's preferences.

  • Masterclasses
  • Sectionals
  • Private coachings
  • Side-by-side performances

These activities are especially effective for repeat visits and provide students with the opportunity to observe up close and to have questions answered individually.

Season Concerts

CMH regular season concerts are always free for students.  They are presented monthly from September through May at Paliku Theatre, Windward Community College and at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Chamber Music Hawaii Education concerts are sponsored in part by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawaii and by the National Endowment for the Arts.
