Hilo or Bust!

Aloha! Welcome to the Spring Wind Quintet's weblog for our tour to Hilo and Ka'u on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are in the midst of our preparations for the tour- rehearsing, planning, and packing. We leave in two days and make our first appearance the next morning at Kapiolani Elementary School. We will be performing at four schools in the Hilo area followed by a full concert program on May 4th at the University of Hawaii Hilo Performing Arts Center, presented by the Hawaii Concert Society . After that we will travel to Ka'u, the southermost part of the Big Island and, for that matter, of the United States! We will also perform at schools in the area and present a concert at Na'alehu Theatre on May 5th. The Na'alehu concert is free!

Our repertoire will include Mozart, Klughardt, Maslanka and Zemslinsky. OK, maybe they are not all household names, but they are all great music. Klughardt is a Romantic composer who's music is very lush and exciting. Maslanka is an American composer who has written three quintets for winds. The one we will perform is inspired by Bach Chorales and he even quotes them in each movement. Zemlinsky is often compared to Mahler, though the short work we are playing is very light-hearted. It's entitled Humoresque, so how serious can it be? We also have a surprise in store for Big Island audiences. Something entirely new, yet familiar to anyone who has enjoyed a starry night in Hawaii.

Stay tuned to our blog to follow our adventures as we renew our friendships and make new friends on the Island of Hawaii. We will try to post updates and pictures along the way. Feel free to add your comments, too. We would love to hear from you.

A hui ho!
